Carnival, the English transliteration of “嘉年华” in Chinese, is a traditional festival in Europe. It originated from ancient Egypt and later became a celebration of the Roman agricultural festival. Over the years, Carnival has evolved from a traditional holiday to a grand entertainment event that combines large amusement facilities with various cultural and artistic activities. These Carnivals, held in various parts of the world, have become symbols of many cities. However, “嘉年华” sounds and looks elegant, which contrasts with the lively and unrestrained atmosphere of Carnival. This is evident in the long-standing Carnival events in Hong Kong, which have become more elegant and mild, setting them apart from the vibrant and exuberant Brazilian Carnivals.
